Create Comics Club - Comics Club Spring Session Instructor: Wayne Carter Wayne has been teaching comics in the upper valley since 2022 and was recently an artist in residence for the National Park Service at Saint-Gaudens. Calling all young artists, storytellers, and superhero inventors! Afterschool Comics Club is a fun, creative space where kids bring their ideas to life through drawing, doodling, and storytelling. Each week, kids will learn how to:Create awesome characters (heroes, villains, and silly sidekicks!)Turn ideas into comic strips and mini-storiesAdd speech bubbles, sound effects, and action scenesExplore different cartooning styles and techniques No experience needed—just imagination! Whether your child loves to draw, tell stories, or make people laugh, this club is all about creativity, confidence, and having fun. Each session consists of a series of fun games, and activities that encourage skill development, teamwork, and most importantly, fun! The program will teach the fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun, positive and safe environment. This will be a non-contact, non-equipment program. Players will be broken out into groups and rotate as a team between 3-4 teaching stations each week. Roller Skating at WABA - Open Skate - (All Saturdays 5/2, 5/9, 5/16) Learn To Roller Skate:Instructors: Jean Carlan and others who have decades of combined skating & instructing experience.Learn to roller skate or level up your current skills. Each 4-week series is for Absolute Beginners, Beginners and Intermediate levels skaters. Attendees will be divided into appropriate levels for instruction for the first half and then open skate for the second half. Attendees need to be at least 5 years old and have their own skates, helmet, wrist & knee pads. (Intermediate adult level skaters may choose to skate without protective equipment.) Foundational skills will be emphasized, including falling and getting up, proper body position and balance, stopping techniques, forward and backward skating, safety and etiquette with many drills and exercises. Intermediate skaters will have an independent workshop style with coaching available on transitions, heel & toe manuals, edge control, spinning, jam skating elements, etc. Besides having the desire and equipment to skate, attendees to these group lessons should have average physical fitness and be able to participate in a group of learners with a ratio near 10:1. Open Skates:Barwood Arena will be available for skating (roller and inline) on three Saturday mornings and one Friday evening in May. Skaters must have their own equipment (no rentals). Helmets are required for children and beginner skaters. Knee, elbow, wrist pads recommended.

Each week, the group will enjoy a 60-minute walk at the Maxfield Sports Complex. This is a great way to get outside, exercise and socialize with others. Approximate mileage is 2-2.5miles. Meet at Pavilion B by 8:30am.Wednesday Hikes:Trip Leader: Hartford Parks & Recreation Staff Get outside and enjoy socializing and getting exercise the old-fashioned way on these moderately difficult hikes. Experience the spring season in the woods. Bring hiking shoes/boots and appropriate clothing as well as water and a snack.Hikes are moderately difficult and can be strenuous. Roller Skating at WABA - Learn to Roller Skate (Absolute Beginners, Beginners, Intermediates) Learn To Roller Skate:Instructors: Jean Carlan and others who have decades of combined skating & instructing experience.Learn to roller skate or level up your current skills. Each 4-week series is for Absolute Beginners, Beginners and Intermediate levels skaters. Attendees will be divided into appropriate levels for instruction for the first half and then open skate for the second half. Attendees need to be at least 5 years old and have their own skates, helmet, wrist & knee pads. (Intermediate adult level skaters may choose to skate without protective equipment.) Foundational skills will be emphasized, including falling and getting up, proper body position and balance, stopping techniques, forward and backward skating, safety and etiquette with many drills and exercises. Intermediate skaters will have an independent workshop style with coaching available on transitions, heel & toe manuals, edge control, spinning, jam skating elements, etc. Besides having the desire and equipment to skate, attendees to these group lessons should have average physical fitness and be able to participate in a group of learners with a ratio near 10:1. Open Skates:Barwood Arena will be available for skating (roller and inline) on three Saturday mornings and one Friday evening in May. Skaters must have their own equipment (no rentals). Helmets are required for children and beginner skaters. Knee, elbow, wrist pads recommended.

Do you enjoy riding your mountain bike but sometimes have difficulty with trail obstacles? Do you lack the confidence to tackle new trail challenges? Are you looking to find more women to ride with and to become a stronger, safer rider? If so, this 4-week Introduction to mountain biking series is for you! It is designed for the new rider, and novice riders who want to improve their skills. We will break down technical skills and take these to the trail to conquer challenges with support and encouragement. Each week, the group will enjoy a 60-minute walk at the Maxfield Sports Complex. This is a great way to get outside, exercise and socialize with others. Approximate mileage is 2-2.5miles. This program gives participants the opportunity to train for and compete in the state track meet with other rec departments. Beginner Mountain Biking for Women - Women's Intro to Mountain Biking Instructor: Anna Schaal, BICP and PIMBA certified mountain bike instructors. Are you ready to give mountain biking a try? Do you enjoy riding your mountain bike but sometimes have difficulty with trail obstacles? Do you lack the confidence to tackle new trail challenges? Are you looking to find more women to ride with and to become a stronger, safer rider? If so, this 4-week Introduction to mountain biking series is for you! It is designed for the new rider, and novice riders who want to improve their skills. We will break down technical skills and take these to the trail to conquer challenges with support and encouragement. Riders will progress to reach their desired goals by building new bike skills with increased confidence. Fundamental elements will be emphasized, including neutral and ready position, bike body separation, pedal position, trail scanning, braking, steering and speed, gearing and cadence, timing and coordination. Each week, the group will enjoy a 60-minute walk at the Maxfield Sports Complex. This is a great way to get outside, exercise and socialize with others. Approximate mileage is 2-2.5miles. This program gives participants the opportunity to train for and compete in the state track meet with other rec departments. The Little Hitters program is designed to develop skills including hitting, catching, throwing, and base running. Each session consists of a series of fun games, and activities that encourage skill development, teamwork, and most importantly, fun! Players will be broken out into groups and rotate as a team between 3-4 teaching stations each week. Each week, the group will enjoy a 60-minute walk at the Maxfield Sports Complex. This is a great way to get outside, exercise and socialize with others. Approximate mileage is 2-2.5miles. This program gives participants the opportunity to train for and compete in the state track meet with other rec departments. Little Sticks Lacrosse - Little Sticks Lacrosse This is an introduction to the game of lacrosse for boys and girls in grades K-2. The program will teach the fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun, positive and safe environment. This will be a non-contact, non-equipment program. Players will be broken out into groups and rotate as a team between 3-4 teaching stations each week.
